Who we are
illustration.lol is a curated editorial illustration platform operated by Design LOL LLC. We showcase, catalog, and celebrate editorial illustrations and the people who create and commission them.
For any privacy-related questions or requests, contact us at privacy@illustration.lol.
What we collect
Anonymous analytics (all visitors)
We use Vercel Analytics and Speed Insights to understand traffic patterns and site performance. This collects anonymous data including page URLs, approximate geographic location (country level), browser type, and Core Web Vitals metrics. No cookies are set, no personal information is collected, and IP addresses are hashed and discarded by Vercel.
Product analytics (consent required)
If you accept our cookie banner, we load Mixpanel to understand how visitors discover and interact with content. This tracks page views, illustration interactions, filter usage, and sharing actions. Mixpanel sets a persistent cookie to link sessions. If you decline, no Mixpanel cookies are set and no product analytics data is collected.
Newsletter signup
If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect your email address. This is stored in our database and shared with Buttondown, our email delivery service, for the sole purpose of sending you editorial updates. Every email includes an unsubscribe link.
Illustration submissions
If you submit an illustration via our submit page, we collect your name, email address, the article URL, and any optional notes. This information is used solely for editorial review. We do not add submitters to our newsletter or share submission data with third parties.
Local preferences
We store your cookie consent choice, theme preference (light/dark), and gallery grid size in your browser’s localStorage. This data never leaves your device.
Automated article and portfolio caching
To keep editorial credit information accurate and up to date, we automatically fetch and cache publisher article pages, and publicly available portfolio and “about” pages belonging to illustrators and art directors. We fetch specific pages we already know about — an article we are crediting, or a portfolio page a professional shares publicly — rather than crawling sites broadly, and we apply reasonable rate limits. We do not fetch content that sits behind a login. Pages are fetched on our behalf by Firecrawl, a web-scraping service we use as a processor — it retrieves page content at our request and returns it to us, and we use that content only as described in this policy.
Information about creative professionals
illustration.lol displays publicly available professional information about illustrators, art directors, and publishers. This includes names, professional roles, locations (city and country), public social media profiles, agency affiliations, and credited editorial work.
This data is sourced from published editorial credits and publicly available professional profiles. We display it for attribution and discovery purposes — to help people find and credit the creators behind the work.
If you’re an illustrator, art director, or represented professional, you can claim your profile. A claimed profile is owner-managed: our automated systems never write to it. If our pipeline surfaces a suggested update about a claimed profile, it is only ever applied by a person making a deliberate editorial decision — never automatically.
If you are a featured professional and would like to update, correct, or remove your information, please contact us at privacy@illustration.lol. This includes information cached from articles or portfolio pages, and any facts stored in our internal extraction records, whether or not they were ever published. We will respond within 30 days.
Automated processing and AI-assisted extraction
We use Anthropic’s Claude API to read the article and portfolio pages we’ve cached and pull structured facts out of them: bylines and credits, titles, publication dates, social media links, contact email, location, representation (agency name and, for our internal records only, the individual agent’s name), and client lists. Claude acts as a processor for this task — it receives page content we’ve already cached and returns structured results; it does not receive your account data, analytics, or anything outside the page content being processed.
Every fact Claude extracts is checked against the original source text before it can be shown anywhere on the site — if we can’t verify a fact was actually said on the page it came from, it doesn’t get used. A person on our editorial team reviews extracted facts before they’re applied to a public profile. Over time, we expect some high-confidence, low-risk facts (like a publication date) to be applied automatically, always with the same verification safeguards, and always reversible by an editor.
We keep the full result of each extraction — including facts we choose not to publish — because we’re building toward a fuller internal picture of how the people, publishers, and companies in our catalog relate to one another. This unpublished material is never shown on the site and is never made public. It exists purely as internal editorial and research material. In particular, an individual agent’s name is captured for our internal records only — it is never displayed publicly unless a human editor makes an explicit decision to do so.

We do not sell your personal information. We have no advertising relationships and do not share data with advertisers.
Cookies and tracking
We use a cookie consent banner that appears on your first visit. Only if you accept are Mixpanel analytics cookies set. Vercel Analytics does not use cookies. Here is what we store:
- Mixpanel cookies (if accepted) — persistent analytics cookies used to understand content engagement. Duration: up to 1 year.
- localStorage items — consent preference, theme choice, and grid size. These are not cookies and are never sent to any server.
Data retention
- Analytics data — retained for 12 months, then automatically deleted
- Newsletter emails — retained until you unsubscribe; deleted within 30 days of your request
- Submission data — your name and email are retained for 90 days after a submission decision is made, then deleted. The article URL may be retained as an editorial record.

- Extraction outputs — the full set of facts we extract, including anything not published, is retained as internal research material; on request we remove a person’s personal information from these records (email privacy@illustration.lol — we respond within 30 days)

EU/EEA residents: We process the professional information described in this policy — editorial credits, portfolio details, and related publicly available professional facts — on the basis of our legitimate interest in documenting and crediting published editorial illustration work. We process account data in order to provide the service you signed up for, and analytics data only with your consent. Where we rely on legitimate interest, you have the right to object. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your national supervisory authority.
